The police are reporting that three workers at a fast-food restaurant in Manchester have been arrested and charged for allegedly participating in a scheme in which customers’ credit and debit card information was stolen and subsequently used to purchase the cryptocurrency Bitcoin.

Charged with unauthorised access to computer data, simple larceny, conspiracy to defraud, and engaging in a transaction involving criminal property are 20-year-old cashier Abigail Preddie, 22-year-old Shane Williams, and 29-year-old Shaquiel Salmon, all of Manchester addresses.

The police say the three were arrested over the weekend during an operation launched after a client of a prominent bank reported unauthorised transactions totalling more than $600,000 in Manchester.

It is alleged that, as part of the scheme, Williams photographed customers’ credit and debit card information while working at the drive-thru of the fast-food restaurant in Manchester.

According to the police, the stolen information was then used to purchase Bitcoin from overseas merchants.

The cryptocurrency was subsequently resold, and the laundered funds were transferred back into accounts in Jamaica.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing, with the police partnering with the bank.
