Berlin, Germany:

Jamaican hotelier Christopher Issa has earned international recognition for his contribution to Caribbean tourism, receiving the 2026 Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA) International Travel Award (ITA) for Excellence in Hospitality Innovation at the ITB Awards in Berlin, Germany.

At the same ceremony, S Hotels Jamaica, the boutique brand he leads as CEO, captured the PATWA award for Best Boutique Hotels – Authentic Experiences (Caribbean), reinforcing the company’s growing reputation for culturally immersive hospitality.

The awards were presented on March 4 during the PATWA World Tourism Leaders’ Summit, held alongside ITB Berlin, one of the world’s largest and most influential travel trade exhibitions and were conferred by PATWA Secretary General Yatan Ahluwalia.

Speaking with The Gleaner following the ceremony, Issa said the personal recognition carried particular meaning after more than a decade of building a Jamaican-owned hospitality brand rooted in culture, creativity and service excellence.

“This is the second individual award that I have received, and it really is quite meaningful,” Issa said. “Our team has worked very hard to represent Jamaica’s tourism sector, and to be recognised for hospitality innovation is a special moment for me.”

Issa entered the hospitality industry in 2009, transforming the former Spanish Court Shopping Centre in New Kingston into the Spanish Court Hotel, a 125-room property that became Kingston’s first new hotel in more than four decades and the city’s first true boutique hotel.

The property quickly gained international attention, earning numerous accolades, including Expedia’s VIP Award for Best Hotel in the Caribbean, and helped reposition Kingston as a growing cultural destination.

Jamaican culture

In 2016, Issa expanded his vision to Montego Bay, acquiring and redeveloping the former Breezes resort on the Hip Strip into S Hotel Montego Bay, a contemporary beachfront property that blends modern design with elements of Jamaican art, music and heritage.

Today the property consistently ranks among the Caribbean’s top hotels on global travel platforms such as Tripadvisor, Condé Nast Traveler, and USA Today.

Central to Issa’s concept of hospitality innovation is the deliberate infusion of Jamaican culture into the guest experience. Across the properties, visitors encounter curated tributes to the island’s heritage, from Bob Marley vinyl record players placed in hotel rooms to striking installations including a 46-foot doctor bird sculpture, Jamaica’s national bird, and a 12-foot Usain Bolt artwork.

“We have tried to infuse our properties not just with Jamaican warmth, but with Jamaican culture,” Issa explained.

Innovation, he added, is also embedded in the company’s internal culture. Staff members are encouraged to propose ideas to enhance the guest experience, and suggestions adopted by management are rewarded, part of a philosophy captured in one of the company’s guiding principles.

“The road to success is always under construction.”

Beyond hospitality design and service, the company has also sought to deepen its impact in the communities where it operates. Through its ‘S for Shelters’ initiative, S Hotels has helped fund and build 63 homes in western Jamaica for families affected by Hurricane Melissa.

Issa said the latest recognition from PATWA affirms the brand’s commitment to blending authentic Caribbean culture with global hospitality standards.

“This recognition by PATWA is deeply meaningful to us,” he said. “It affirms our commitment to delivering authentic Jamaican experiences with a global standard of excellence.”

For Issa, however, the greatest measure of success is not the trophies collected along the way, but the ability of a Jamaican-owned brand to showcase the island’s culture, creativity and warmth to visitors from around the world.
