UDC removes 'unauthorised' fence erected at Long Bay Beach
The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) has moved swiftly to remove a barrier that was erected on its Long Bay Beach property in Negril, restoring full public access.
The Corporation says it did not install the fence and, within one hour of being notified of its presence, took decisive action to have it removed.
The action from UDC came after a Negril resident posted a video to social media on Tuesday morning highlighting the fact that a barbed wire fence had been erected from the road to the sea, blocking off access to a section of the beach.
By Tuesday afternoon, the individual posted another video with an update that the fence had been removed.
In a media release on Tuesday evening, the UDC said it maintains clear policies governing beach access, which prioritise use by Jamaicans and the wider public.
Describing the incident as deeply regrettable, the Corporation emphasised its commitment to ensuring that every Jamaican can enjoy the country’s natural assets.
It noted that it will continue to act promptly and decisively in upholding this mandate, reinforcing a culture where all beaches under its management remain open, accessible, and welcoming to citizens and stakeholders alike.
