SAJ offers training to boost industry skills in Excel and Hazardous Materials Safety
The Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ), a longstanding champion of professional development in the local and regional maritime and logistics sector, is set to host two dynamic training programmes in August and September. Designed to sharpen skills and strengthen workplace performance, both sessions are open to industry professionals locally and regionally.
The first training session, Competence in Microsoft Excel – Intermediate Level, is scheduled for August 27-28 and is a partnership between the SAJ and the Vocational Training Development Institute (VTDI). “At the SAJ, our goal with each training is not only to build practical skills but to ensure participants leave with a recognised qualification that strengthens their career prospects, whether they are job seeking or enhancing their resume,” Yahneake Sterling Russell, senior manager, business development, marketing and member engagement at the SAJ said. “We chose to partner with the VTDI because they are Jamaica’s premier institution for technical and vocational education and training, known for their hands-on, competency-based approach and nationally accredited programmes.
Aimed at maritime and logistics professionals, administrative staff, managers, and anyone eager to improve their data management skills, the training will dive into topics such as formulas and functions, pivot tables, data entry efficiency, and practical business applications. By the end of the two days, attendees can expect to work smarter, analyse data more effectively, and produce streamlined reports that drive decision-making.
The second training programme will focus on the Principles of Hazardous Materials Safety and is a partnership with the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU). “This partnership reflects our shared commitment to equipping the industry’s workforce with the knowledge, skills, and recognised qualifications they need to enhance their careers and strengthen workplace safety,” Sterling Russell said. “We are proud to deliver this programme with the CMU to ensure that staff in these areas are trained to meet international standards.”
She emphasised that this training is a must for shipping, warehousing, logistics, and port workers, especially those who handle dangerous goods. Scheduled to run from September 9-11, the programme will cover the identification and classification of hazardous materials, safe handling and storage procedures, international labelling standards, and compliance with global safety regulations.
Spaces are limited for both sessions. Companies and individuals wishing to participate in the programmes, should register early by contacting the SAJ at training@jamports.com.
“Continuous training is essential to maintaining the high standards our industry demands,” said Sterling Russell. “These programmes are designed not just to share knowledge, but to give participants practical tools they can apply immediately on the job.”
The SAJ remains committed to leading workforce development initiatives, ensuring Jamaica’s maritime and logistics professionals continue to excel and remain at the forefront of industry best practice.
KFTL Powers Ahead in Port Digitisation
Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited (KFTL) will launch its new Electronic Payment System (EPS) on September 1, 2025, marking the latest step in its ongoing digital transformation.
The EPS will enhance payment flexibility, security and efficiency for domestic container transactions and cargo clearance, offering customers both online and on-site payment options via a redesigned web portal and mobile app available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
This milestone builds on KFTL’s October 2023 deployment of the Caribbean’s first private wireless network at a port, implemented with Nokia and EGC International. The network delivers industrial-grade connectivity for real-time monitoring, critical communications and seamless operations across the Terminal.
In 2025, further advancements include implementing a digital radio system and completing phase one of the Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) project, with installation on 20 straddle carriers to enhance operational efficiency and safety.
“Innovation is at the heart of KFTL’s growth,” said Banda Sene, chief information officer. “We are streamlining our business processes, enhancing customer experience and meeting the demands of a modern port.”
These technological enhancements demonstrate KFTL’s dedication to leveraging technology for safer, more efficient operations while reinforcing its role as a leading transshipment hub across the region.
