Raising a glass to charity

It is no secret that Montegonians like to party in style. Well, last Saturday, the Montego Bay Chapter of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) presented the perfect occasion to social butterflies, with the hosting of its fourth annual food and wine-pairing fundraiser, Celebration of Fine Jamaican Cuisine.

The lawns of the charming Rose Hall Great House was the venue for this go-to event, which also saw a host of corporate entities in attendance.

Elegantly dressed guests gorged on a lavish variety of dishes prepared by top chefs from local hotels. Caribbean Producers Limited (CPJ) ensured that there was no shortage of wine to go with all the delicious offerings.

As the guests mixed and mingled, they bounced to the rhythmic selections of DJ Murdock, who skilfully performed his entertainment duties for the night.

But Montegonians did not only show up to party, they were also supporting a worthy cause, as proceeds from the event are geared at supporting the less fortunate in the Second City. This year, the organisers hope to raise at least $1 million towards the continued development of the SOS Children's Village and the Tower Hill Basic School, both located in St James.

"The image of the hotel industry is that we are constantly taking and not giving, and we want Jamaica to see that the industry gives back its fair share. You have to give back and take care of the communities that your employees come from and help the less fortunate," noted Omar Robinson, general manager of Round Hill Resort and also one of the organisers.

The event which relies heavily on corporate sponsorship, received support this year from Caribbean Producers Jamaica, Royalton White Sands, Heart Trust/NTA, Wisynco, Riu hotel, Coyaba hotel, Half Moon hotel, Round Hill Hotel and Villas, Holiday Inn Sunspree Resorts, Rose Hall Developments Limited, Glar Lighting, Appleton, SKYY Vodka, and Pure Country Juice.
