Roach a pest to England!
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):
Seamer Kemar Roach stunned England with a five-wicket haul as the visitors crashed to 77 all out in their first innings at tea, on a dramatic second day of the opening Test here this afternoon.
Resuming from lunch on 30 for one, England astonishingly lost their last nine wickets for just 47 runs, as the innings folded 15 minutes before the scheduled interval, forcing an early break.
Roach finished with five for 17 while pacers Jason Holder (2-15) and Alzarri Joseph (2-20) picked up two wickets apiece.
England’s total was their fourth lowest against the Windies and lowest-ever at Kensington Oval, handing the hosts a healthy lead of 212 runs.
The Windies went in to bat again after choosing not to enforce the follow on.
There was no sign of the drama to come even when opener Rory Burns played onto the fourth ball after lunch from Roach without adding to his two.
However, a wretched period for England then gave Windies the upper hand as the visitors lost five wickets for five runs in the space of 45 balls.
Jonny Bairstow (12) played on to Roach with the score on 44 before captain Joe Root (4) was hit in front by Holder without addition to the total.
With the score on 48, Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali fell without scoring in successive deliveries to Roach who removed Jos Buttler for four in his next over, to a catch at the wicket.
Joseph then claimed two of the last three wickets to fall while speedster Shannon Gabriel got the other in a second spell.
Scores so far: Windies 289 and 58/1, England 77. Windies lead by 270 runs.
