Jackson in hunt for Diamond League double
Following months of intense action, the 2022 Wanda Diamond League series will come to an end with the two-day finals on Wednesday and Thursday in Zurich, Switzerland.
Event winners will be crowned and in addition to collecting their cash prizes and Diamond League trophies, they will also earn places in next year’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Several Jamaicans will be in action over the two days, but it will be the World Championships 200 metres champion, Shericka Jackson, who will attract most attention. Jackson, who was also the silver medallist in the 100 metres in Eugene, Oregon, will be going for double success as she leads all qualifiers in both the 100 and 200 metres with 35 and 23 points, respectively. In the 100m, she had one win, three seconds and one third-place finish, while in the half-lap event she finished with two wins and one second, with her only defeat being in Doha, where she was beaten by American Gabrielle Thomas.
Jackson will be hoping to become the fifth female to score a Diamond League double in the same year and join the likes of countrywoman Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Carmelita Jeter of the United States with double success in the 100 and 200m. American Allyson Felix and Shaunae Miller Uibo of The Bahamas completed doubles in the 200 and 400m.
Jackson, who will be hoping to go all the way and capture US$30,000, along with two beautiful trophies, will get her campaign off the ground on Thursday’s second day of the meet, when she contests the 100m final at 1:23 p.m. Jamaica time. She will return for the 200m final just over a hour later, at 2:31 p.m.
