STATHS seeking to outlast St Jago in return leg
With a slim advantage in hand, St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) hope that their pursuit of a first ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup title in three decades can continue as they face St Jago High in the second leg of their second-round tie today at 1 p.m. in the first game of a double-header at Stadium East.
STATHS defeated St Jago 2-1 in the first leg at Prison Oval on Wednesday in a tight game extending their unbeaten run in the competition to 11 games. Their group stage campaign has been impressive with seven wins and scoring 40 goals, but have been given stern tests with their three draws this season being against Jonathan Grant and Norman Manley High, two schools who advanced to the second round. The Phillip Williams-coached team who are in the second year of their rebuild have been getting goals through various contributors this season and are looking to make their fifth-straight appearance in the Manning Cup final eight.
Meanwhile, St Jago who entered the second round as one of the best four third-place teams have advanced from a group that included many-time champions Jamaica College, and St Catherine, a team that they managed to get the better of in their last meeting on October 11.
In another match, defending champions Kingston College will hope that they can find the key to unlock the defence of Jose Marti High in the second game of the Stadium East double-header at 3:15 p.m. Jose Marti who advanced to the second round as the 16th seed held KC to a scoreless draw in their first leg encounter. KC entered the second round scoring 44 goals with Dujuan Richards among the leading scorers.
Jose Marti are the only team so far this season that has managed to hold KC scoreless. Many-time champions Jamaica College will face Norman Manley High at Ashenheim Stadium with a healthy 5-0 lead from the first leg looking to keep the door shut on any avenues of a comeback while St Catherine High take a slim 1-0 lead into their second leg tie with Wolmer’s at Spanish Town Prison Oval. St Catherine are seeking to make the quarterfinals for the third time in six years while Wolmer’s are hoping for a third berth in four years.
