Price wants clinical Humble Lion against Molynes

FINISHING HAS been one of the difficulties for Humble Lion last season and was evident in their season opener. Humble Lion head coach Andrew Price hopes they can be more ruthless in front of goal this season, starting with their game against Molynes United at 3 p.m. today.

The game is the first of a Stadium East double-header.

Humble Lion found finishing difficult against Dunbeholden last week, the game ending goalless despite the chances that they created, something that Price said they have been concentrating on all week to correct.

“We have to be more clinical in front of goal. I thought we got a couple of opportunities where we could have gotten all three points and, if we were clinical in front of goal, we could have made the advantage pay. We have to let the players understand that sometimes there will be one opportunity a game and we have to make use of that one opportunity,” Price told The Sunday Gleaner.

Humble Lion scored 23 goals last season from 22 games, narrowly missing the play-offs.

In a year where relegation has returned, Price says there is no increased pressure on him in his third full season with Humble Lion but is targeting being a consistent presence in the top six. Price wants to avoid having to make a late charge up the table like last year.

“Throughout the season we want to make sure that we are constantly in the top six so we have some amount of consistency throughout the season. It’s about picking up points and maximum points along the way. And that is what our aim is this season,” Price said.

Molynes United, under new head coach Alex Thomas, will hope to stop the trend of losing their second game of the season, something they have done twice in a row.

Molynes took an early lead in their season opener last week Sunday against Waterhouse but eventually lost 2-1, thanks to a Devroy Grey second-half brace.

Meanwhile, Tivoli Gardens will face Chapelton Maroons in the second game of the double-header at 5:30 p.m. Both are looking for their first wins of the season after contrasting results in their season openers.

Tivoli were held to a 1-1 draw with a Vere United team that only had 12 players available. Chapelton lost their premier league debut to reigning champions Harbour View, despite a spirited display.

Chapelton did not have their full complement of players available to them in last Monday’s game, with some players currently in their schoolboy football seasons and some left out because of administrative issues.

However, assistant coach Tashana Vincent said, based on the performance in that game, they are poised to cause surprises this season.

“We have a young team and I think that, once we start to play more games together and build team cohesion, we will make some noise,” Vincent said.
