‘I think I did my best’
Wayne Shaw steps down as KSAFA president, citing ‘personal reasons’
KINGSTON AND St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) was well run over the last five years, said Wayne Shaw, after tendering his resignation as president on Tuesday night.
Shaw, who spent five years in the role, did not disclose his reasons for stepping down, calling them ‘personal’, but said his tenure was as good as it could have been under the circumstances.
“In the five years, the organisation was run well. We started under-10 competitions which seek to develop younger players from a very young age and overall I do not think it was a bad tenure.
“I think I did my best with what was available and I wish my successor all the best because it is going to be a tough job,” he said.
However, a source within the organisation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the president may have had other reasons for walking away, reasons associated with the running of the organisation.
The president, the source disclosed, had grown frustrated with the difficulty in obtaining substantial sponsorship for the various leagues and programmes and wanted to give someone else a chance.
When contacted by The Gleaner, Shaw admitted sponsorship was one of his administration’s main obstacles.
“It’s getting harder to get sponsorship. It is taxing, and COVID shifted a lot of things. Our last league, we didn’t get all the sponsors that we were looking for.
“But people are not sponsoring football so freely these days. So whosoever takes over will have a hard task with that,” said Shaw.
Although there are no obvious successors at the moment, Shaw is of the view that there are many competent administrators out there who can do a good job.
“Things are getting harder but we are one of the better-run organisations and there are many people out there who can serve. So let’s give someone else a chance.”
