Hydel’s girls dominate middle-, long-distance events at Fervet meet

LED by Class Three athlete Oshea Cummings, who had double success, Hydel High’s girls dominated the middle- and long-distance events at Saturday’s Fervet Distance Carnival at the Ashenheim Stadium, Jamaica College (JC).

Cummings, a Trnidadian, destroyed the field in the 3000 metres open, winning in an impressive meet record 10:34.49. Her teammate, Tyrella Duff, was a distant second in 11:36.05, with Tashalee Palmer of St Jago High third in 11:52.03.

If that was not enough, Cummings was even better in the Class Three 1500m, posting a personal best and meet record 4:52.50. Shanoya Palmer of St Jago had to settle for second in 5:10.19, with Kayanna Douglas of Alphansus Davis High third in 5:19.36.

The Corey Bennett-coached girls also dominated the 800m, winning in all three classes. Shaneil Henry won Class Three in 2:24.35, ahead of Kayanna Douglas of Alphansus Davis, second in 2:25.34, and Shanaya Palmer of St Jago third in 2:25.42.

Sackaela Whilby was best in Class Two in 2:21.60, ahead of Tashana Brown of Alphansus Davis (2:22.16) and Shameika Davis of St Elizabeth Technical (STETHS), (2:23.76. Rihanna Morgan closed out the sweep for Hydel, winning Class One in 2:16.09. Kedreda Coombs of St Jago was second in 2:17.32, with Shavancia Griffiths of STETHS third in 2:19.38.

Alphansus Davis took the Class Two 1500 metres with a podium sweep led by winner Tabbrel Williams in a meet record 4:49.63, ahead of teammates Chevelle Whyte (4:51.54) and Aiikey Reynolds (4:54.21).

St Jago’s boys also performed well, with Ryan Achau taking the Class One 1500m in 3:59.40. Evans Tetteh of JC had to settle for second in 4:06.28, with Nicholas Fredrick of Alphansus Davis third in 4:09.68.

Khieme Campbell, Phillip Palmer, and Danniel Pennant also picked up wins for the Monk Street-based team. Campbell crossed the line first in the Class Two 800m in 1:58.67, ahead of Keneil Daniels of Excelsior High in 1:58.78 and Bevin Davey of JC in 2:00.91.

Palmer was best in the Class Two 1500m in 4:20.99, ahead of Cavel Nooks of JC in 4:22.76. Pennant finished in front in the 5000m open, clocking a personal best 15:21.94 ahead of Campion College’s duo Amerii Brightley in 16:12.57 and Jonathon Leiba in 16:51.64.

Ricardo Lee of JC won the Class Three 1500m in 4:25.50. There was also an impressive win for Calabar High as Dughauntei Lewis captured the Class One 800m in 1:53.64, ahead of JC’s Samuel Creary, 1:54.12, and Carlos Bison Culnez in 1:54.81.

Mickoloy Saunders registered a win for the home team in the Class Three 800m, clocking 2:05.98, ahead of Bryan Stewart of Excelsior (2:13.21) and Bowen of Calabar (2:13.31).
