Arnett Gardens continued their strong start to the Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) after they thrashed The University of the West Indies (UWI) 3-0 in comfortable fashion at the UWI Mona Bowl yesterday.

Sade Berry (14th minute), Suen Gregory (18th), and Anna-Kay Richards (67th) led the goalscoring efforts for the Junglists.

Garnett Lawrence, head coach of Arnett, praised his team, saying the win came in spite of their lack of preparation due to poor weather conditions throughout the week.

“Well, the win is good and we give thanks for that,” Lawrence said.

“About the game, I think we were a little bit lacklustre because we didn’t get to train this week because of the weather most of the time. So it was a little bit difficult today, but I’m glad for the win.”

It was Arnett’s second-straight win of the season after they opened their campaign with a 5-1 romp against newcomers Real Mona.

They again controlled much of the contest, pressuring UWI from the opening whistle.

The hosts tried to survive the Arnett onslaught but their resolve broke in the opening 20 minutes with two early goals from Arnett.

Berry opened the scoring in the 14th minute before Gregory, a constant goal threat, doubled the lead four minutes later.

Arnett had to wait for their third of the contest and it came in the second half through a corner kick routine.

The Junglists fashioned an opportunity by playing a ball to the edge of the box before slipping in Richards.

With little wiggle room, Richards turned to shoot at goal and fired the ball over the head of the goalkeeper.

UWI’s head coach Davion Meggio said it was a deserving result as they were not prepared to take on one of the JWPL’s top teams.

He said this should be a lesson for his team who continues their search for their first win of the season.

“To be honest, the team, that’s what they deserved. Football is a game that is played not only played on the field, it’s also played off the field and the team wasn’t prepared today for this game,” he admitted

“The result, it shows and I hope we take it as a learning experience and move forward with that.”

In the other results across the league, Springers United and Los Perfectos picked up identical 3-0 wins over Real MoBay and Mile Gully respectively, while three-time defending champions Frazsiers Whip edged Federal United 2-1.

Real Mona played out a 1-1 draw with Proven Girls as last season’s beaten finalists Cavalier got the better of Wifi United 2-1.
