What short memories we have!

The Editor, Sir:

All of those who are asking for the prime minister's head on a platter should refer to John 8:7, "He who is without sin cast the first stone." It takes a man - a big man - to say "I am sorry" and the prime minister has shown that he is that kind of man.

His dealing with the matter in question was a clear error of judgement and, yes, his actions posed grave consequences for Jamaica, and that should not be taken lightly; but he has publicly apologised for his folly, expressed remorse for the role he played and has asked for forgiveness. It is now left to us as a people to respond graciously and give him the opportunity to redeem himself. I am sure that he is well aware that in his quest to regain the trust and confidence of Jamaicans at home and abroad, his every move from here on will be heavily scrutinised and evaluated, so he will have to 'walk the line'.

Those who are so eager to offer themselves as an alternative ready to lead with 'honesty and integrity'; and willing to condemn the prime minister and to reject his apology seem to have conveniently forgotten how their actions over the past several years contributed to the current state of the country. They need to be reminded of Romans 2:1: "Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgement, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practise the same things."

I think the prime minister realises that he deserves the chastisement meted out to him, but he has also demonstrated that he has learnt his lesson. Therefore, let's accept his apology, continue to keep him in our prayers and give him the opportunity to not only reclaim his place in our hearts and in our country but to do the job he was elected to do.

I am, etc.,
