LETTER OF THE DAY: Bruce must act immediately
The Editor, Sir:
Much has already been said about the matter regarding the extradition of Christopher Coke. However, now that a warrant has been issued for his arrest, it seems that the public at large is gearing up for a confrontation between the security forces and the people of west Kingston. If this were to happen, it could be a very bloody affair. But is this the only solution?
I would like to suggest an alternative. Bruce Golding is the sitting member of parliament for west Kingston, and in this time of crisis and intense tension, it is his duty in that capacity to try to head off any violence. This is a singular moment for him to exercise his leadership responsibilities and skills.
He must visit his constituency, before the security forces attempt to enter, to reassure his constituents that their well-being will be protected, to encourage them to cooperate with the agencies of law and order, and to urge them to peacefully remove the blockades they have erected on the streets. This is his most urgent task at the moment. Nothing short of his personal appearance in his constituency will do. He must act immediately.
He must set an example for all politicians to show that the people they represent matter not just at election time, but at critical moments like this.
I am, etc.,
