If Jamaica really wants change ...

Published:Tuesday | June 1, 2010 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

PLEASE PERMIT me space in your paper to advise the president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica, Joseph Matalon; the members of the Jamaica Manufacturers' Association; the chief executive officer of Grace Kennedy, Douglas Orane; all other members of corporate Jamaica; as well as the owners and managers of media that, if and when an election is called, this nation, Jamaica, expects that no financial assistance whatsover will be made to any political party or their members.

In the past, many of you have knowingly or unwittingly contributed to the dehumanising of communities while you jockeyed for your portion of the scarce benefits which allowed you privilege. Can you now accept that you have contributed, in no small way, to being a part of the problem and not of the solution?

No media election campaign

Also, if the owners and managers of media houses really want what is best for Jamaica, then the profiteering that is anticipated from electioneering must not happen for the next election. This nation should not expect or tolerate any media election campaign.

Rather, let the people who wish to offer themselves for service do so, campaigning door-to-door. Walk the walk and talk your talk.

I humbly submit that the millions/billions of dollars identified as donations to parties and the equal millions/billions being spent on advertising in traditional media must be channeled to the rebuilding and rehumanising of Tivoli Gardens and all other garrison communities.

If this is indeed a 'turning point', then it needs to be so for all.

I am calling on the Electoral Commission and the citizens of Jamaica to endorse the above. If this is to be a new day, then let there be new light and insight.

It is my view, however, that the calling of an election at this time would serve no useful purpose. Surely we do not need any more opportunities for further mischief, mayhem or massacres. Neither should we create any opportunities to put our security forces in harm's way.

Let's see who really wants the right kind of progress now.

Walk good.

I am, etc.,

Fae A. Ellington
