World observes Environment Day
Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon, has expressed disappointment at the levels of extinction of some of the world's species.
"Biodiversity, the incredible variety of life on Earth that sustains us, is in peril. Our health, well-being and sustainable future depend on this intricate, delicate web of ecosystems and life," Ki Moon said yesterday ahead of today's celebration of World Environment Day.
Locally, National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) head, Peter Knight, has said the greatest threat to Jamaica's environment is the attitude and culture of some people.
"The negative effects of squatting is a major problem for the environment. The problem is further compounded by people who feel they can drive and throw things through the window," Knight said.
At the same time, the NEPA head said the wealth of a nation was best assessed through an evaluation of its natural resources.
"We have to look at the state of our biodiversity, at how we treat our coastal regions, especially how we react to the idea of protecting our environment," Knight said.
