Market clean-up under way despite setbacks

The clean-up exercise in the burnt-out section of the Coronation Market by the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) began yesterday, as the crew worked assiduously to clear the rubble.

Regional Operations Manager David Bloomfield said the work, which started yesterday morning, would be completed today.

He said the team has been working hard to meet the two-day deadline.

"We started the operation this morning to clear rubble and debris from the burnt-out section of the market. We are working to get the work done on time," he said.

NSWMA boss Joan Gordon-Webley said the market clean-up was delayed because its insurer needed to see the damage.

She said while the work was slowed by heavy afternoon showers yesterday, the garbage-collection agency was still sticking to the deadline.

Millions of dollars will be spent to complete the renovation of bullet-pocked communities and the torched market.

Sections of the market were extensively damaged by fire during the gun battles in west Kingston recently, forcing vendors to take their business to Three Miles. However, activity officially resumed at the vending zone on Saturday.
