Call in the guns

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I support whole-heartedly the call by Orville Plummer in his letter published in The Gleaner on June 10 for a gun amnesty. I concur that this is a good time to have such an initiative. The security forces are currently exerting a control that has not been seen in Jamaica in recent history. Murders have declined drastically and many so-called dons and alleged gang leaders are turning themselves over to the police. The guns, however, are not coming in with them.

In addition to calling for these dons, the police should also be calling for the guns. I believe that should a gun amnesty be called at the moment, a lot of guns will be turned in just as how these dons have turned themselves in. There is a movement afoot that we should not let pass without taking advantage of it. It is also possible that the boys/men who look up to and obey the orders of these dons will, in the absence of their leaders, turn in the guns. A gap has been created by the absence of these dons and the police should step in and try to influence the actions of these boys/men to do good.

If it doesn't work, then at least we tried but we should not let the opportunity pass.

I am, etc.,
