A lack of credibility
The Editor, Sir:
It is unfortunate that the leader of the opposition, who has publicly professed her Christianity and supposedly was sent by God to lead us, does not adhere to the Scriptures. "How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye', when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?" (Matthew 7:4)
Minutes after the news broke that Al Miler had been charged with perverting the course of justice and harbouring a fugitive, her party was all over the news demanding that the pastor should be relieved of his position from the National Transformation Programme (NTP).
On what moral grounds can they make such demands, while Kern Spencer, charged for more serious crimes, is still a member of parliament for the People's National Party (PNP)? This is such a blatant, yet stupid attempt to try and score political points. The PNP seems to believe that most, if not all, Jamaicans are ignorant. Furthermore, Al Miller seems to have more credibility than both political parties put together.
Very important
As for the charges brought against the rev by the police, this is but another indictment on the security forces. The commissioner's presentation at the press conference following the capture of 'Dudus' shows how impotent the police force is, as he, the commissioner, could not state exactly what had happened.
A police officer told one of our newspapers that the vehicle in which coke was travelling was being escorted by two cars carrying gunmen and police officers who were following the convoy for hours. he further stated that the front car was allowed to get away because Coke was their main focus. When the cop was asked what happened with the third car, which was travelling behind Coke's vehicle, he said the driver sped away on realising that Coke's car had been pulled over by the police.
Now, anybody who plies the Mandela Highway route knows that if a roadblock, according to the police, is set up, there is no way you can easily evade that trap. Now, this action by the police force in allowing criminals to escape is damning when you are requesting the Government to grant you more powers in the name of a state of emergency to get criminals.
Mr Commissioner, there is a vast difference between intelligence gathering and a tip-off.
I am, etc.,
