'Building a library one book at a time'

The Editor, Sir:

At the end of April, I visited Jamaica as a volunteer partaking in a parenting project and education programme run by Projects Abroad. I am second generation British born of Jamaican parents.

I visited Albion (south Manchester) and was touched by the poverty that I witnessed. It was seeing a young boy so happy and excited at receiving a new book that birthed the idea in me to build a library within that community.

Since returning, I have planned an event that will take place on July 24 to raise awareness of this project. The main thrust will be to get people to donate books instead of paying to get into the event. There will be live music, spoken word, youth dance performances and singing.

We may be born in England but we need to look back towards our original home and assist our people. To read, is to know.

I am, etc.,

ALISON JOHNSON
