Keep up the pressure

The Editor, Sir:

An excellent editorial on Tuesday, 'Don't sanitise Dudus'. And I happen to agree completely. I would personally like to see you keep up the pressure, particularly on this notion of "breaking the law when the law doesn't suit you, or when it is simply more convenient to do so."

Note that many of us truly weaken the value we might give law and justice when we set ourselves up against the rules we see others as having made for their benefit and not ours.

Here in the United States, for example, we cheat on our taxes, our husbands and wives, and we routinely drive faster than the speed limit, though not fast enough to most likely get a ticket, and we do it all with the excuse that everyone does it or that it's a stupid law.

I believe it is this "me against the world" that is also the reason we give up so easily when we are confronted by supposed heroes like Dudus ... . At that point, in our collective guilt, we no longer have faith in either the law or in our ability to protect those who become victims.

I am, etc.,
