National Meats in trouble
National Meats and Food Distributors Limited, in an acknowledgement of its weakened financial position, has cut 131 staff members.
Managing director David Phillips announced the redundancies to staff Friday, July 9.
The cuts were "due to the company's deteriorating working capital and inventory shortages," National Meats said Tuesday.
The job cuts involved all departments, from managerial to line staff, all of whom had been properly compensated in line with labour laws, the company said.
The reports of National Meats' troubles have been making the circuit for several months. But the company, which operates out of Lydford in Golden Grove, St Ann, says that it isn't ready to give up yet.
"National Meats remains open for business and continues to make deliveries islandwide while it continues to fight for its survival," its release said.
Efforts to reach its principals were unsuccessful.
