More action from NGOs and CBOs

Published:Saturday | July 17, 2010 | 12:00 AM

The Editor, Sir:

The point raised in Peter-Ann Baker's article in the July 11 edition of The Sunday Gleaner is timely and should be viewed by every citizen in Jamaica as integral to foster change and development while reducing the level of crime.

The voices of community-based organisations (CBOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) should be heard at the national level. Their input should help to generate discussion and trigger a plan of action as to the way forward for the Jamaican people. The majority of these organisations work within communities and obtain critical information on the needs and aspirations of the residents.

I hope that Peter-Ann Baker's opening discussion in your paper will not stop there but would influence both the political and community-based leaders to grasp the importance of this type of involvement at the policy level and thus foster worthwhile develop-ment in our nation.

I am, etc.,
