Partnership to battle prostate cancer

Published:Thursday | September 16, 2010 | 12:00 AM

The Editor, Sir:

I refer to the Letter of the Day of August 25 titled 'Wake-up call for men'. The Care Section Council of the Jamaica Red Cross, in pursuance of one of its fundamental principle of humanitarianism, has taken the initiative to collaborate with the Lions Club of New Kingston to mount a series of health fairs in certain targeted communities. Our concern stems from the prevalence of prostate cancer among Jamaican men. Also, recognition of the need to help sensitise those persons who will be affected.

In this regard, our first focus will be women. First, because women general take their health more seriously and will seek out literature and any available technical information so that they can make informed decisions. Second, women are the ones immediately affected when their men, whether fathers, husband, partners, son, etc are diagnosed with prostate cancer. They usually bear the immediate financial and emotional cost, even though not the actual physical pain involved. It is these women who are required to care for the victims of prostate cancer.

It is expected, therefore, that the same approach which women take towards their own health will be transferred towards prostate-cancer care by encouraging the men in their lives to be proactive in seeking information from the Internet, attending health fairs or otherwise. This information can be used in preventative, interventative or supportive roles.

I am, etc.,
