The St Andrew Central Police Division has launched an investigation into the seizure of more than 300 rounds of ammunition and a Bryco pistol yesterday.
The find was made at Cedar Valley Road in Standpipe, St Andrew.
Head of the St Andrew North police, Superintendent Derrick 'Cowboy' Knight, said that about 5:30 a.m., a police team carried out a cordon-and-search operation in the community when the gun and 355 assorted rounds of ammunition were found on a premises.
"We believe that what the police found this morning was being used to supply the criminal underworld. We believe this because of the wide assortment that has been seized," Knight told The Gleaner yesterday.
The senior crimefighter said the police operation was in response to a rise in crimes such as rape, robbery, murder, shooting, as well as other antisocial behaviour, in the Standpipe area, a mainly low-income, inner-city community.
Knight said the police would be maintaining a presence in the area as the investigation widened.
"There must be an owner for this ammunition. Therefore, the investigation will continue until we find the persons involved," he added.
The rounds seized were compatible with M16 rifles, .357 Magnums, and other handguns.
No one was arrested in yesterday's find.
