OCHO RIOS, St Ann: MORE THAN half-a-billion dollars is to be spent under the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme on Fern Gully in St Ann.
The work is intended to improve the roadway and build a drain to alleviate the flooding of the resort town of Ocho Rios.
As part of the project, approximately 1.6 kilometres of road surface in the gully will be overlaid with concrete.
A drain will also be built to channel water off the roadway and into the sea.
Stephen Shaw, communications manager at the National Works Agency, said preliminary work would be carried out by the National Water Commission and the Jamaica Public Service before the roadwork begins.
He was addressing a town hall meeting at the Ocho Rios High School to sensitise residents about the work programme.
The project is expected to be completed within 12 months.
During the improvement work, the gully will be closed and traffic diverted via the Breadnut Hill to Harrison Town road. Shaw assured residents that the alternative route would be maintained for the duration of the contract.
