Jamaica Teachers' Association walks out

The Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) yesterday announced its withdrawal from the Teachers' Services Commission (TSC) and the monthly meetings with the Ministry of Education effective immediately.

Citing a remark by Education Minister Andrew Holness on a morning radio programme for withdrawing from the monthly meetings, the JTA in a media release signed by its president, Nadine Molloy Young, said the central executive of the association, at its regular meeting yesterday, unanimously decided to discontinue its participation in any further meetings of the TSC.

The JTA said it will not return until someone other than the senior adviser to the minister is named to lead the commission.

The minister's decision to appoint Alphanseus Davies to head the commission has not sat well with the JTA, which represents the island's more than 20,000 teachers.

The JTA's decision took Holness by surprise.

"I am just hearing that," he said when asked for a response.
