Trelawny ready for hurricane season
FALMOUTH, Trelawny:
CHAIRMAN OF the Trelawny disaster preparedness committee and mayor of Falmouth, Collen Gager, said the parish is in a state of readiness as the Atlantic hurricane season approaches.
Gager told The Gleaner last Thursday that all major drains in flood-prone areas have been cleaned in phase one of a two-phase operation. Phase two will involve the clearing of debris from areas noted for flooding. He said the committee has been meeting on a regular basis and more than 100 shelters have already been established.
The mayor said managers and other staff members have been identified to man the different shelters. He also noted that phonecards, batteries, flashlights, blanket and lanterns have already been distributed to the different shelters. The parish disaster committee chairman, however, declined to disclose the overall amount of money he has expended on the project so far, only to say the money came from the Department of Local Government.
Gager also noted that councillors would be receiving sums to take care of drains in their respective divisions as a part of the preparedness exercise.
