PSOJ: Keep eyes on YUTE

The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) plans to use the first anniversary of the Tivoli Gardens incursion to draw greater attention to the Youth Upliftment Through Employment (YUTE) programme.

The programme was developed by the PSOJ last December in the aftermath of the disturbances in west Kingston last May.

The programme is designed to empower unattached youths by providing job training, mentorship and skills upgrading. It also zeroes in on some of the root causes of violence and unemployment among young people through an aggressive two-year programme.

Church demands answers on Clarke killing

The United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands (UCJCI) has appealed to National Security Minister Senator Dwight Nelson to give a clear statement on the progress of the Keith Clarke investigations.

The UCJCI said it is concerned that the investigations have dragged on for so long, especially since those allegedly involved in the killing are known.

"The silence has been deafening regarding the circumstances of the death of Mr Keith Clarke," the group said in a statement released recently.

Clarke, the brother of former government Minister Claude Clarke, was killed last year during an operation by members of the security forces who claimed they were in pursuit of then fugitive Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.

This week, The Gleaner zooms in on Tivoli Gardens, west Kingston, one year after the May 2010 operations aimed at capturing alleged crime lord Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.
