FRUITFUL VALE, Portland:

EDUCATION MINISTER Andrew Holness last Wednesday announced that a new high school is to be constructed in Portland as part of the Government's initiative to increase opportunities and standard for every student.

Holness made the announcement during the opening of the newly constructed Fruitful Vale Primary School in West Portland.

Holness said a high school is to be built under a programme which is to be implemented by the Government. He also said under the new programme, a total of 10 to 15 schools are to be constructed across the island, as the Ministry of Education continues its quest to address the problem of insufficient space in secondary schools.

"There is a definite need to build more schools. This is necessary so as to provide adequate space for secondary students. Our intention is to reduce the size of students in classrooms from 40 to 30, which should allow for better concentration and learning. I am well aware of the importance of a good education system, which is paramount in this day and age, and we are committed to provide the support needed to ensure that such standards are maintained."

The new Fruitful Vale school replaces the old structure, which served the community for many years but had fallen into disrepair.
