FIVE PERSONS escaped serious injury in Clarendon yesterday after falling into a chasm.

Stephen Shaw, manager of communications and customer service at the National Works Agency (NWA), said the incident took place in Hayes where a section of the road broke away.

Two of the five persons who fell into the 10-foot deep cleft were covered by silt and had to be dug out by residents, Shaw told The Gleaner.

"It certainly was scary," Shaw said.

He has urged Jamaicans to be careful in their approach to suspect breakaways or faults.

"We understand persons being curious, but due caution has to be exercised in going around and going about your business," Shaw said.
