Dr Jean Holder has resigned as chairman of regional airline LIAT after seven years.

The Barbadian will remain in the position until a new candidate is selected to replace him on the LIAT board and a new chairman is named, said a statement issued through LIAT.

Holder was appointed to the position 1n 2004. Before that, he was in the diplomatic service for 14 years and spent 30 years as the head of two regional organisations, the Caribbean Tourism Research and Development Centre and the Caribbean Tourism Organisation.

His resignation as LIAT chairman was tendered to the Barbadian government.

"The chairman has indicated that there are a number of persons he felt it appropriate to inform before the news became public, and he especially did not wish this announcement to be made while the company was in the middle of union negotiations," said the statement issued Tuesday, June 14.

"Unfortunately, the information was leaked to the media, which began to press the company for confirmation".

LIAT has announced plans to close a number of ticketing offices in favour of online bookings as a cost-saving measure, and is negotiating with unions the terms on which the displaced workers will be terminated.
