The Bureau of Women's Affairs (BWA) in association with the Social Development Commission (SDC) on Tuesday held a Masculinity Training/Workshop at the Falmouth Fire Station.
The objectives aimed to engage men in honest or open discussion on gender socialisation and masculinity within the Jamaican context, as well as exploring issues such as what makes a man a man; socialisation and gender versus sex.
Forty persons participated in the training programme, which is the fourth being held behind St Mary, Portland and St Ann. The training is part of a larger project of strengthening state accountability and community action towards ending gender-based violence in the Caribbean, which began in 2009 and will end this year.
The project was done with the funding assistance of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
The workshop explored male perpetrated violence and the role of men in the prevention of such violence, especially those against women and importantly the development of an action plan by the men on the way forward.
The workshop was moderated by Dave Noel Williams, senior policy analyst and male desk BWA. who did the invocation, welcome and overview. He also gave a presentation on 'Gender Socialisation & Masculinity' along with 'Men on a Mission' .
