Robinson's legal cost appeal hits snag
AN APPEAL brought by member of parliament for North East St Ann, Shahine Robinson, challenging the legal costs awarded against her in her dual citizenship case, failed to get under way on Thursday.
Robinson is appealing a $15.3 million legal costs, which is to be paid to elector Manley Bowen who brought the election petition against her shortly after the September 3, 2007 general election.
The appeal hearing was put off when it came for hearing before Supreme Court Judge Glen Brown on Thursday because the Registrar of the Supreme Court has not yet complied with a court order.
The registrar was ordered to put into writing the submissions which the lawyers had made before her during the hearing for taxation of costs. The order was made by a Supreme Court Judge at a case management conference last month.
Justice Brown then rescheduled the hearing for September 29 and 30.The North East St Ann MP is seeking to get the court to reduce the legal costs. The bill is in relation to legal and indemnity costs.
Meanwhile, attorneys-at-law Abe Dabdoub and Raymond Clough who are representing Bowen are seeking to have the legal bill increased.
In a cross-appeal, they are asking the court to grant them the $19 million they had submitted for legal costs.
