FALMOUTH, Trelawny: The town of Falmouth has been chosen as the venue for the 19th annual national prayer vigil and the national community project that will follow this year's event.

Chairman of the Trelawny Ministers' Fraternal, Rev Sonia Seivwright, says Governor General Sir Patrick Allen charged the committee to plan and execute the prayer vigil, which will be held on December 11.

The fraternal is also to decide on a community project for the parish, to be carried out in the week following the prayer vigil, which will observe the theme 'Unity, Healing, Justice and Peace'.

"The committee was given the task of deciding on the most effective project, in keeping with the theme. A number of projects have been suggested, and a decision will be made on the most meaningful one for us to undertake," Seivwright said.

According to her, the body has decided to move away from the tradition of holding the prayer vigil in a church building, and is exploring the possibility of using the cruise ship terminal in Falmouth to host the function.

To this end, a top-level team has been drawn from heads of departments, civic groups and the media in Trelawny, to work alongside the ministers' fraternal in planning the function.

The national prayer vigil was conceptualised by former Governor General Sir Howard Cooke, who saw the need to seek God's intervention in helping the nation to solve its many social problems, injustices and the economic plight of the people.
