Objects from our Past

Jamaica has a rich history, and as we celebrate 50 years of Independence, we take a look back at how we got here. With the kind assistance of the Institute of Jamaica, 'Objects from our Past' will highlight a total of 50 objects which are part of the Institute of Jamaica's collection. Today, we feature two of these Objects from our Past. Check this space next Sunday for two more.

Reel-to-reel tape of the radio serial: Dulcimina

Dulcimina was a radio serial which was broadcast in the middle of the day. It was so popular that when the actress playing one of the more popular characters died, her funeral, which was held in downtown Kingston, was so well-attended that Parade was blocked for hours. Dulcimina was written, produced and directed by Elaine Perkins and ran for 13 years (1967-1980).

Cecil Baugh vase

Cecil Baugh is no stranger to the world of pottery.

Referred to as 'Jamaica's Master Potter', he has won numerous honours for his work, especially the Silver Musgrave Medal of the Institute of Jamaica.  His work extends beyond the world of pottery as he was a former soldier enlisted in the Royal Engineers of the British Army during the Second World War, where he trained in Lancaster. 

With the Royal Engineers, he went to Cairo, Egypt, where he was introduced to Egyptian Blue pottery glazing.
