MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica:
Fifteen million dollars in prize money and a production that will rival other international shows, are just two of the amazing aspects the organisers of Miss Jamaica World are hoping will make this year's staging a spectacular event.
The plans were revealed by Laura Butler, the new franchise holder for the pageant, at a western sensitisation function at Bluebeat in Montego Bay on Wednesday. "We are moving away from just a contest or a competition, to an evening of entertainment, we are bringing a little Broadway feel to it in music, dance, song and entertainment," she revealed.
She added, "We have two associates, two bachelor's and a master's programme that will go to the top five girls," Butler explains that for contestants who already have degrees, they can choose another contestant to benefit. The scholarships are valued at $5 million.
REMARKABLE
The pageant will move to the west this year, and will be held at the Montego Bay Conference Centre on July 21. She noted that the set is remarkable. "You should see our set design. It's one that you have never been seen before; we have an MIT graduate doing a three-dimensional set," Butler beamed
Committee member Max Earle, noted that the television production is going to be of an international standard to rival any of the big networks. He said it is not just about putting down cameras, but a production that will be televised across the world.
Also in attendance were mayor of Montego Bay Glendon Harris, Junior Taylor, the western organiser; manager of the Montego Bay Conference Centre, Dittie Guise, among others.
