Alleged lottery scammer for court Sept
WESTERN BUREAU:A St James man who was arrested early last month in connection with the lottery scam was offered $300,000 bail when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.
Twenty-seven-year-old mason, Robert Shaw, of a Granville address, was charged with conducting fraudulent transactions. He is to return to court on September 25.
The court was told that on July 15, at approximately 4:30 a.m., a police team, acting on a search warrant, conducted a raid of Shaw's house. A black laptop and several pages with overseas persons' contact information were found.
Under caution, Shaw reportedly said in a plea of innocence: "Officer, you know seh me nuh know nothing about what you find."
Shaw's lawyer, Carl Singh, made a successful bail application for the defendant.
"He (Shaw) has no previous convictions, and he has lived at Granville for most of his life ... . He can report at the nearest police station," Singh told presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie.
Clerk of the court, Orrett Brown, asked for time to complete the prosecution's case file against Shaw.
"The prosecution is not opposed to bail. We are awaiting certain things to be completed, so I request six to eight weeks in this matter," said Brown.
The resident magistrate then offered Shaw bail, with conditions of reporting to the police.
"He is to report to the Granville Police Station every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and he is to have no contact with the persons named on the laptop," said Tie.
