'Home Again'

Canadian/Jamaican writer and director, Jennifer Holness, hosted the local media at a screening of the feature film, Home Again at the Carib 5 cinema at Cross Roads in Kingston on Wednesday.

Holness, who currently lives in Canada, had her Jamaican stars out, including the actor renowned for his role in Ghett'A Life, Kadeem Wilson and Brian Brown, a Montegonian, who was making his debut on the big screens.

Home Again tells the story of three young people deported to Jamaica, after being raised in the United States. Once they have landed in Kingston without a compass of any kind, each of the characters embarks on a journey that pushes their endurance beyond measure, and forces them to discover who they truly are. On the most fundamental level, Home Again asks the question, "How would you survive?"

SET UP TO FAIL

According to Holness, "Deportees are akin to an 'untouchable' class. They are universally despised and are blamed for the violence on the island. Without any resettlement or reintegration programmes, these people are being set up to fail," Holness told The Gleaner when interviewed in April.

Well, months after selling out seats in theatres across Canada, the film depicting the atrocities and struggles faced by the deportees was number one at Canadian box offices for three weeks and was screened to sold out audiences in the twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, where it was filmed.

Let's see how the 2013 BAFTA Festival Choice award-winning film will do on its own soil.

Home Again is playing at Carib 5, Palace Multiplex, Palace Cineplex and Odeon.
