The University of the West Indies, Mona - Western Jamaica Campus (UWI WJC) will host its annual open house between January 13 and 15.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is expected to feature, among other things, campus tours, financial-aid guidance, and programme information.

The aim of this year's event is to attract prospective students, familiarise them with the university's facilities, and to open informal communication channels between staff, students, and parents.

The activities for the three days will also include Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination workshops, seminars, and campus tours.

On Wednesday, January 15, there will be a special literatures in English workshop, which will be led by poet and novelist Olive Senior.

Special workshops on financial aid and career opportunities will also be conducted and classrooms and laboratories on the campus will be open for viewing. In addition, an application centre on campus for prospective students will be made available.

The campus, which sits adjacent to the the Sangster International Airport, was established by the UWI in recognition of the growing demand for tertiary-level institutions in western Jamaica, as well as in keeping with its 2007-2012 Strategic Plan.

It offers programmes designed to reflect the areas of growth and development in western Jamaica, including management studies, banking and finance, economics, psychology, and tourism management in the Faculty of Social Sciences; integrated marketing communication, and digital media production in the Faculty of Humanities and Education; and bachelor's degrees in nursing, law, and information technology, as well as a master's degree in accounting.
