Many shiny pairs of eyes could be seen at the Jamaica National Children's Home in St Andrew on January 11. The reason was that 88 children received gifts from Generation 2000 (G2K), the youth arm of the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party. During the Christmas period, G2K had collected clothing and other items that were finally distributed to the orphanage.

With some packages of snacks for school breaks, the organisation wanted to address especially the very young recipients. They were assisted in the venture by furniture and appliance store, Singer Jamaica Limited, which contributed a 32-inch TV.

G2K's president, Floyd Green, told the children, "Take your education seriously, use 2014 to focus on your books, don't be distracted by the difficulties you will face. Instead, use them as encouragement to work even harder to secure your future through education," he added.

Members of the G2K team spent time with the youngsters, some of whom are orphans while others have been abandoned and some of them have physical or mental disabilities. There are also some whose parents are often unable to take care of them.

how it began

The donation project arose from several visits to the Home by the G2K chapter at the University of Technology.

Vice-president Ronique Rhoden said: "We look forward to establishing a greater relationship with the home, and we invite other entities to make similar contributions."

Although being an arm of a political party, the G2K holds on to its mandate of "more than just politics" and serving the Jamaican youth, Green emphasised.
