A little bit of Cuba in Jamaica

The residence of Cuban Ambassador Bernardo Guanche Hernandez was the centre of a major celebration during the recently held fifth meeting of young Cuban residents and descendants. Youths from prominent high schools and primary institutions were also present to enjoy the day's festivities. It was like being placed in a foreign land as the official language was Spanish during the function.

Ambassador Hernandez gave a short speech which highlighted some important dates for Cubans. Some of the speakers included Aracelis Duffus, president of the Association of Cuban Residents; Leroy Anedu and Marlyn Pitters, president and vice-president, respectively, of the Group of Young Cuban Residents in Jamaica.

JA-CUBA BOND

The adults sat upstairs discussing the bond that Jamaican and Cubans have created, the children were downstairs playing their version of hide-and-seek. Even children who were born in Jamaica were speaking Spanish like a first language, only occasionally breaking into English.

After the official proceedings, there was a recreational segment for everyone to enjoy at the poolside, with enchanting Cuban entertainment and refreshments.
