The launch of Miss Jamaica World 2014 was filled with more beauty and grace than any one room should have all at once.

CRU Kitchen and Lounge on Lady Musgrave Road was blessed with the likes of former Miss Jamaica Worlds Ayisha Richards, Regina Beavers, Terri-Karelle Reid, Sara Lawrence, Miss World 1976 Cindy Breakspeare and reigning Miss Jamaica World, Gina Hargitay.

Though the early showers caused some delays to the launch, it was well attended by sponsors and supporters of the prestigious pageant now under the stewardship of Laura Butler.

Protect the Goal campaign

There was a host of sponsors and they all shared why it was important for them to be part of a pageant that has such a strong history in Jamaica, with us having produced three Miss Worlds.

With beauty with a purpose a focal point of the pageant, Kate Springs, United Nations AIDS country director, took the opportunity to launch the 'Protect the Goal' campaign. Gina Hargitay is currently the face of the campaign and will be travelling to World Cup 2014 in Brazil to promote it. The three goals they will be focusing on are: eliminating new HIV infections; deaths caused by the disease; and eliminating discrimination.

This year, several local charities will be benefiting from the competition. They include McCam Child Care and Development Centre, STEP, St Patrick's Foundation School for the Deaf, and Missionaries of the Poor.

The eliminations will take place at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel on May 31, and the Grand Coronation again returns to the Montego Bay Convention Centre for July 12. The event will be broadcast on Flow 100, and Tracks and Records will be hosting a viewing of the event.
