Flow MoBay City Run raises millions for tertiary students
The organising committee of the Flow MoBay City Run presented more than $3 million to four tertiary institutions at a presentation ceremony at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort in Montego Bay on Wednesday, July 2.
The recipients were the University of the West Indies Western Jamaica Campus (UWI WJC), Montego Bay Community College, the University of Technology Western Jamaica, and Sam Sharpe Teachers' College.
In addition to the bursaries to students, Wisynco's Bigga brand will offer a two-year scholarship valued at $250,000 per year to an undergraduate student studying marketing .
Through the initiative, a brand ambassador will be selected, Wisynco's Vivia Newman told the gathering, adding that the individual will help the company to highlight the importance of staying in school while pursuing a career goal.
Disbursement of funds
The remaining $2.75 million, raised through the inaugural run staged May 18 in Montego Bay, will be disbursed to needy students starting as early as August 15.
"Forms will be available at all participating institutions by July 10, and the deadline for receiving applications will be July 30. Applicants will receive a confirmation of their award by August 15," said Janet Silvera, chairman of the organising committee.
Sign of hope
The announcement has been well received by the various heads at the institutions, with spokesperson, Dr Luz Longsworth, UWI WJC director, describing the funding as one that will make a huge difference, "to many of our students in our institutions. It is a sign of hope for the future of tertiary-level education in western Jamaica", she said.
Based on the distribution method that could be implemented, this money will benefit scores of students this year. The organisers have named Isiaa Madden-Browne chairman of the scholarship committee, which will also include Nicole Allen and Carol Dunbar and a representative from each institution.
