A 56 year old Justice of the Peace (JP) who was convicted on two counts of negligence contrary to common law was this morning granted bail in the Appeal Court.

Howard Charvis was convicted in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate Court on May 15.

It was alleged that he certified two photographs at different times for a woman, who used a false name to collect Hurricane Dean relief funds.

The woman was arrested and charged.

When the JP went to court as a crown witness, Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar directed the police to charge him with negligence.

Mr. Charvis had said he knew the woman for four years as ‘Miss P’.

He said at the time when he signed the photographs he did not know her surname.

Attorneys-at-Law Ravil Golding and Natasha Thompson applied for bail on the grounds that the JP was convicted on charges that were not known in law.

Court of Appeal Judge, Mahadev Dukaran then granted him bail in the sum of $50,000 with one surety.

A date is to be set for the hearing of the appeal.
