Firefighters and personnel from the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) were still working to put out a fire at the Riverton Landfill in Kingston.

The blaze, which started yesterday afternoon, has been confined to the back of the landfill and has been generating thick smoke, which has spread to communities as far as the Washington Boulevard and Molynes Road in St Andrew.

Executive Director at the NSWMA, Joan Gordon-Webley, who was at the landfill said the efforts of personnel were being challenged by the effects of the wind.

Mrs. Gordon -Webley said steps have been taken to keep the blaze under control.

The cause of the latest blaze at the landfill is still not known.

The site has been the scene of several fires over the years.
