Farmers urged to protect lives and livestock
The agriculture ministry is urging farmers to take the necessary precautions to protect their lives and livestock as Gustav threatens the island.
Agriculture minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, said it is important to protect livestock in order to reduce the likelihood of them being killed.
He said a National Agricultural Disaster Risk Management Committee, which was implemented in May, has met with response organisations at the parish level to determine the sector’s level of preparedness.
It is expected that based on those meetings the necessary actions will be taken to guard against possible losses.
Dr. Tufton is encouraging all farmers to contact the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) parish offices for disaster preparedness tips.
RADA is promising that damage assessment will be conducted within three days of the passage of the system.
