Fire causes $11m damage at AMG Packaging
Fire suspected to have been caused by an electrical failure damaged inventory estimated to be valued at about $11 million at premises occupied by AMG Packaging and Paper Company Limited at 10 Retirement Crescent, Kingston 5 this morning.
"Thank God for the quick response from the fire units because … they managed to contain the fire and put it out very quickly," said Mark Chin, non-executive chairman of AMG Packaging.
The fire was reported to be triggered by an explosion on a utility pole nearby.
Chin said that while the fire was bad news, the damage would not cause much disruption to business as no machinery was damaged.
The stock was insured.
Michael Chin, the company's general manager, said they have already made orders to replace the damaged paper and as soon as they had finished cleaning up they would get back to production because they had additional stock.
