Hurricane Gustav has made landfall south-west of New Orleans, battering the US Gulf coast with torrential rain and severe winds.

The force of Gustav, downgraded to a Category Two storm, snapped power cables and choked New Orleans\' drains.

Forecasters have warned of sea surges of 14 feet or 4.2 metres above normal.

The US National Hurricane Center said the eye of the storm went ashore near Cocodrie, Louisiana, packing winds of 110 miles or 175 kilometres per hour.
