Jamaica aids Turks and Caicos
The Jamaican government is helping the Turks and Caicos Islands to recover from the battering caused by Hurricane Ike.
The Government has sent a six-member team to the islands.
The team comprises representatives from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, the Health Ministry, The Jamaica Public Service Company, the United States Agency for International Development, the Canadian High Commission, and the United Nations Development Programme.
The Turks and Caicos was hit by category four Hurricane Ike on Sunday. It destroyed more than 80 percent of the houses on the island.
The hurricane, which swept away boats, also left the airport under water, and downed power-lines.
A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister said Jamaica’s response is in keeping with a mandate from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency.
Under the agreement, member countries of the Agency offer needs assessment in the event of a disaster.
The team is expected to return to Jamaica on Thursday.
